Does the church help or enable the poor?

3 comments:

  1. Oh my goodness! Maybe Christians don't want to help the poor because Evolution is true, but most thinking people would! What in the world does one thing have to do with the other??? If people are poor and needy, they are poor, and they need help....no matter what anyone believes one way or the other! This sign is the perfect example of the unyielding dogma of the church and the limitations it projects onto other non-theist people. Once again, this is trying to portray atheists (and/or people who know that evolution is a fact) as uncaring demons. I really get so sick and tired of this. I hope some of the Christians on this blog take note of this...but I'm sure they see this type of thing daily...probably from their own church. Again, I know, I was raised in the church and in this type of hatred toward others who don't think as you. So, I guess if these people at this church found out that evolution WAS true, they definitely wouldn't help the poor!!! What type of circular reasoning is this??? Oops, I don't think I can use the word "reason" at all here.

  2. I have no clue why a church would put up a sign such as that..

I do think that people that don't believe in God can be just as moral, if not more, than anyone else.. But just as I'm sure you don't want people thinking that all Atheists are demons, because some child rapist out there calles himself an Atheist.. I hope that you wouldn't judge all Christians and call them "non-thinkers" and think we have no "reasoning" because some of "christian" that is unmoral. (and yes, i know that there are more than just one unmoral christian, just as there are more than one unmoral athiest.

  3. Of course, I don't think that all Christians are "demons". I didn't say that at all. As I've said before on this site, people are people...there are "good" Christians and "good" atheists as far as how they live in their daily lives....also "bad" ones on both sides. But, if you ask any theologian, preacher, etc., he/she will tell you that religion is not about reason and not about thinking....it is about faith, pure and simple. I'm sure you have to admit that your preacher does not want you postulate and think about denying or even questioning the "word of God" in your Bible. Christianity is all about faith. If you start thinking clearly and critically about what is stated in the Bible, you will be going against your duty to believe through faith alone....which is the tenet of Christianity. You are not supposed to think or try to contribute or postulate on your own....it's all about the dogma you are taught which you must believe by faith.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight"
    2 Corinthians, 5:7

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1

There is no reason here...only faith...which is fine, because that's what Christianity is about. So, if you have faith, you are loyal, and if you start thinking and reasoning and doubting, you are not loyal to Christianity.
My brother is an evangelical preacher, and I've had many discussions with him about this. We always come down to the fact that either you believe the Bible is true or you do not....and then he will say you have to believe through Faith....it always comes down to faith. Of course Christians are "reasonable" about everything else in their daily lives. You reason constantly in most decisions you make all day long, BUT you do not reason in your faith in Christianity. Reason and faith just do not go together.
